Commemoration
August 26, 2010 commemorates the 100th birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, the 1979 Nobel Peace prize recipient who spent her life serving the poor in Calcutta, India – a lifetime of seva. President Ronald Reagan presented Mother Teresa with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985, the same year she began work on behalf of AIDS sufferers in the U.S. and other countries. In 1996, President Bill Clinton and the U.S. Congress awarded Mother Teresa honorary U.S. citizenship. In 1997, Congress awarded Mother Teresa the Congressional Gold Medal for her “outstanding and enduring contributions through humanitarian and charitable activities.” Mother Teresa died in Calcutta on September 5, 1997. She had been a citizen of India since 1948.

A postage stamp in her honor will be released by the USPS on September 5, 2010. The stamp was designed by acclaimed artist Thomas Blackshear II who grew up in Atlanta, and now lives in Colorado.

SEWA joins in humbly recognizing her life of selfless humanitarian work in serving the poor and destitute in India and the world.

Message from Chairperson

Jasbir Kaur Guliani

Waheguru jee ka khalsa Waheguru jee kee fateh

Thank you all for being part of the kitchen inauguration celebrations. Entire sangat deserves to be proud of this huge accomplishment of having constructed this langar kitchen – totally debt free. May Waheguru’s blessings continue to be upon us all, and may He guide us in all our future endeavors. We are working on additional construction efforts for  better access to the existing building. The Building committee will keep us updated on the progress. With Waheguru’s kripa and sangat’s commitment, we hope we can also accomplish our dream of a large diwan hall in the near future.

Summer holidays are over, and children are back to school. I hope you had a good summer. With record 90+ degree days this year, we look forward to some relief soon. It reminds me of the hot summers in Punjab – I can almost taste the cold lassi. We look forward to welcoming the children back to Punjabi school at SEWA, which starts on September 12. Please also join us for free fun on September 5 evening, as the City of Roswell celebrates the end of summer with fireworks and music on the Centennial High School grounds. More information in this issue.

This is joyous time of the year, with a lot of festivals to celebrate:

India' s Independence Day,
Raksha-Bandhan for sister-brother love and affection,
Onam is the biggest harvest festival in the State of Kerala.
Soon we will be celebrating Tian Daa Mela.
Pahela Parkash Divas Sri Guru Granth Sahib September 1, 2010
Eid, marks the end of Ramadan, month of fasting, on September 10, 2010.
Several Gurpurabs fall on September 16th 2010

SEWA is looking forward to participating in the City of Roswell annual Youth parade on October 9, with our youth performing dances and marching in the parade. Please encourage all our youth to participate. Additional details are in this issue.

Be happy in whatever you do or celebrate, all is well with Waheguru’s grace.

Education
Punjabi School will be reopening after the summer holidays on September 12th.
Please enroll your children for this coming year, ages 4-18yrs.

Registration is now open, please contact Sukwinder K Dhada - sdhada@gmail.com, or punjabischoolsewa@gmail.com for forms.

Punjabi School is also looking for volunteers either as class teacher or substitute teacher.

Building

SEWA’s new kitchen was inaugurated and is in full use since the August 1st Grand Opening. We are working on buying some shelving and other required equipment to organize the kitchen for the convenience of sewadars while preparing langar for the sangat. If somebody would like to donate a small freezer or an Ice machine for the kitchen, please contact any of the building committee members. This would help us.

We are in the process of getting estimates for the pathway access connecting the kitchen with the main building and bathrooms. Plans are being made to renovate the upper level with new Sukhaasan room and multi-use classrooms which can also be used as a large conference room.

After this very hot Summer, Nanik Chugani is working on some upgrades to our landscaping during the coming fall season. He would appreciate anyone who would like to volunteer.

Thank you, for all your support during the past and future projects.

Upcoming Event: Sojh 2010

After a grand success of the SOJH workshop last year, we are ready again to organize this event with Guru's Grace soon. This workshop will help us (especially the younger of us) to interact with Bani. The overall structure of the event will remain the same with an exciting after event for felicitation of the participants. Stay tuned for more details.

Upcoming Event: Gurmat Sangeet Darbar/ Gurmat Sangeet Workshop
http://worldsikhnews.com/29%20July%202009/Image/sarinda.jpg
We are very excited to announce that during the weekend of 15th October 2010 we will be visited by gurmat sangeet jathas from Boston, Toronto, UK for a weekend of Gurmat Sangeet Darbar/Gurmat Sangeet Workshop.

These keertaniyas are well known for their abilities to do keertan using classical instruments like dilruba, sarangi, and taus. These were the instruments which were used during our Sikh Guru's times. Let us all come together and revive our old traditions and listen to how keertan must have sounded upto 500 years ago. Truly a great sound to experience in our own Gurudwara.

There also will be a workshop which will focus on the basics of Gurmat Sangeet, raagas & classical instruments. This workshop is open to all kids/youth.

This is the first time that Atlanta/Georgia we will have a Gurmat Sangat Samagam, so please inform your friends and relatives to hold this date and to attend this unique event.

We ask for Guru's grace and your sewa. Please email us at sewageorgia@gmail.com , if you wish to do any kind of sewa for this event. We need lots of volunteers and your kind contributions to have a successful and smooth event. Please take advantage of this unique golden opportunity.
